"Slow write speed" 2009-11-29

I get about 2 MB/s write speed when copying large files to this drive. It took over an hour to reformat it with Windows 7. There is nothing 'Jet" or 'Flash' when you are copying data to this drive. The computer store advertised it as 'High Speed'. The only thing high speed about it is the USB 2.0 port. I get about 14MB/s read speed. Reading files from this drive seems reasonably fast. I've been using this drive for 2 days now. So far, it seems to work ok. It's just slow. I read that it's supposed to have a blue LED. Mine has no working LED at all.

This item has adequate memory and hasn't lost any files. However, I can't seem to figure out how to alphebetize my songs or artists which makes any individual file hard to find (there are over 2100 seperate audio files). It assigns a number to each file but the numbers apear to be random.

I've been using Kingston Data Traveler flash drives for quite a few years, all the way back to their 256mb models of the early 2000s (remember when 256mb was HUGE!?!). I've never had an issue with them for basic file transfers and simple back ups. It's important to understand what they are intended for and what they are not. These are not 'premium' high speed transfer flash drives. Their read/write speeds are average--not 'slow' as some have said in their review, just not top-of-the-line. If you want extreme speed, spend the extra money and get a high performance zip drive. They are also not for secure, protected back ups. If you want a drive with native (or built in) security features, spend a bit more to get one that does. (There are also MANY free apps available to encrypt data to any flash drive, including Data Travelers. Just do a web search to find them). It's unfair to complain that these drives are missing features that more expensive drives have; if you want additional features be prepared to pay for them and get a more expensive unit.

That said, Data Travelers are wonderful multi-purpose flash drives with extremely high reliability and ease of use. They're not the slickest or the fastest, but they are a great value for the price, especially if you only intend them for general back ups, moving files, etc. I use them as boot drives for Ubunto, disk partition software, Arconis True Image rescue programs, etc. It's nice to bee able to load a bundle of trouble shooting programs from one drive--I don't need extreme speed, just reliability. They are also great options to run with Windows Vista or Windows 7 as a ReadyBoost drive to speed up your system.

Build quality is good not great. The plastic shell of the drive is made well and is solid to the touch (some flash drives feel like they'll fall apart in your hands). The cap comes off too easily and can be hard not to lose. The back of the drive has a loop to attach a lanyard, but no lanyard is provided in the packaging. The drive is probably 25% larger than most of it's competitors, so if size is a concern for you, you might want to choose a different option.

For the price, this is a great flash drive. Not it doesn't have all the features you may want in a flash drive, but it does what it does very well and reliably. Kingston is one of the longest running maker of flash drives, and they do a great job. If you want an inexpensive and quality flash drive for a very reasonably price, you could do much worse than a Data Traveler.

Lots of rave reviews for this drive...here's mine. I've been using it heavily for about three months with no malfunctions. Construction is not as rugged as other drives, but given the reputation of the manufacturer, I am confident that it will hold up long enough for the next generation of thumb drives to come down in price. For the time being, 16GB is plenty--almost 4 regular DVD's worth of data.

I purchased the Kingston DataTraverler 16GB partially because I needed a larger flash drive and partially because I thought the color was cute. When it arrived, I loaded all of my files from much smaller flash drives onto the Kingston. I am a Mac user at home and PC user at work. For years have gone between the two platforms with my flash drives. The next day at work, I accessed files from my new flash drive, input new data, and saved what I had done. That night I went home and all of the files I had used at work were corrupt. I have had nothing but trouble with this flash drive since purchasing it and would not purchase it again if I had the choice.

I have always used SanDisk Flash Drives for nearly a decade. When it came time to upgrade to more memory, I succumbed to the great price of Kingston and got this 16 GB flash drive. Well, all I have gotten is error after error message. Files get corrupted, disappear, won't copy, etc. It has taken a lot of time to track down missing files, scan the disk for errors and get the drive back in working order. I've owned about ten different USB drives, and I was describe the DataTraveler 101 as solidly average - but so's the price, so the value is fine.

For performance, I get about 4MB/sec write speed and 13MB/sec read speed. This is on a Core2 Duo system with an ASUS motherboard. In contrast, my dual-channel OCZ Rally2 gets about 9MB/sec write and 20MB/sec read - but the Rally2 costs twice as much: OCZ Rally2 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive OCZUSBR2DC-4GB

Although the Traveler 101 will work for ReadyBoost, I would recommend a dual-channel USB because the write speed for ReadyBoost is important.

I own four of these Kingston Data Travelers in various capacities and I find them very handy for portable storage but this one I bought specifically to use with ReadyBoost to improve the memory performance on my husband's Windows 7 computer.

Not all flash drives are created equal and many of them aren't fast enough to work with ReadyBoost but the Kingston performs admirably and made a noticeable difference.

Considering how reasonably priced they are and how well they handle a variety of tasks, I'm a big fan of these convenient little drives.

The price was great and it was delivered quickly. I have had success with Kingston before. I bought this to load MP3 files and listen in my Ford with SYNC installed. No matter what I tried, SYNC would not recognize this device. I tried my other 3 usb's (which have less storage) and they all worked. I tried to use it for another application which formats the device with unix and it would not work for that application either. I will use it for mere data storage I guess.

I just received the HP USB flash drive, I am adding a higher capacity drive to my previous Lexar "Jump Drives".

The first thing I noticed is how much faster it transfers data than my Jump Drives. Don't get me wrong, Lexar drives are good,solid,long lasting drives but the transfer speed of the HP is immediately noticeable.

Since I just got it, I will have to see how long it last's.

I bought the HP 8GB USB flash drive as a replacement for an older, smaller flash drive (my requirements were putting too much strain on the older drive). I thought, "$15.99 for 8GB of transportable storage? I can't go wrong with that." And you know what? I didn't go wrong. I've been using this drive now for a few weeks and have been quite happy with it. I'm even running a database from it at work and I honestly can't see much loss with regard to response time. It's a thumb drive. Pretty utilitarian. Not a lot to say, except that it's fairly narrow, so you can place these in close proximity to each other or other connectors. One gripe I've had about other thumb drives is that they're unnecessarily wide and that makes them unsuitable for some laptops where the external connectors are close together.

If you are looking for the Kingston Data Traveler with SECURITY SOFTWARE - DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! I assumed since it had the EXACT SAME NAME as my old drive "DataTraveler", it was the EXACT SAME PRODUCT! And my old drive had the security software on it. Wouldn't you assume the same thing? Same name = Same product? Called tech support & they said I can't even install the software on the new drive! So now I have to go through the headaches of sending it back!

FYI - I have owned a Kingston DataTraveler 4GB for about a year. I have been having problems with the files corrupting on the drive and disappearing, so I decided it was time to get a new drive. After this disappearing act (i.e. NO SECURITY SOFTWARE) I'm assuming that my disappearing files are their fault as well. I mean if the company isn't smart enough to change the name of their product, how can I expect they are smart enough to create a good product? I will not only NOT be buying future products from Kingston, I will not be speaking highly of the company in my social networks.

NO TWITTER LISTING - I noticed Kingston isn't listed on Twitter, could it be that they are too afraid to face the music? Don't worry Kingston, we're still tweeting the negatives about you, I saw many disgruntled tweets when I added mine to the list.

I tried this flashdrive for the purpose of storing client files as they accrue (2000-word documents saved 3 times a day). The Kingston works perfectly for this purpose, it provides effortless use with both types of laptops I work with, and quick start-up and 2-second loading of new documents. Files from previous years tranferred in about 5 minutes. So now I have lots of storage dating back years in one package the size of the old 1gb drives. This is the third DataTraveler I have owned in recent years, and like the 2 and 4 G versions, it works adequately well on the Mac. Moreover, unlike some other flash drives, there is no annoying Windows-only software that pops up automatically on the desktop. However, transfer speeds seem much lower compared with the 4 G model, and time to mount or unmount the disk seems high. Another shortcoming is that it requires more power than can be delivered from the keyboard USB port, which can be inconvenient. Unless you really need the larger capacity, I would go for a smaller faster model in this line. Alternatively, there may be faster flash drives in another Kingston model or from another company.

My purpose in buying this drive was for occasionally transferring files between two computers. It doesn't get a ton of use, maybe a couple times a month at best. For the time I've owned it, which I think is a little over a year, I haven't had any issues though. Because I don't live my life off this drive on a daily basis, I can't really endorse the long term reliability of this drive. However, for occasional use for the purpose of transferring documents its done its job without fault.

I don't think it's the sturdiest drive out there, so if your looking for something to put on a keychain or carry around a lot, I would pay a more a get something something a little better. I'm not saying its poorly made, just not made to stand up to a lot of abuse. However, for a drive that is going to live its life stuck in a drawer or occasionally stuck in a backpack, it should hold up just fine. A heavy user and abuser should get something else.

For a fairly priced occasional use drive, with reasonable storage size, where sturdiness isn't a factor, this drive fits the bill. If I was looking for unshakable reliability, I might turn else where and invest a little more in a drive.

The drive is fine. But the case and cover for the drive is junk. The plastic is so brittle, thin and cheap that it is almost worthless.

With the on the go life style the U3 launchpad was made for those needing a quick way to boot up the files they needed from any windows computer. However in most cases the software is slow and I needed this for storage more than to tote around programs, which I now do from [...]. All I had to do to remove U3 from the drive was to go to the sandisk website, look for the uninstall app, plug my drive in and presto it was gone. Took less than a min as it has done for most of us who found this out. The fact that it doesn't have a cap to lose and it's space saving design also appealed to me. There was even a little ring for me to put it on my lanyard. Good amount of storage space for my art file formats and other files that I need through out the day. I gave it 5 stars for being friendly enough to get rid of U3 and do what it was made to do. Store things.

The flash drive arrived on time, and it has been working well so far. I'm impressed by the read/write speed it can achieve: when handling large files, Windows 7 indicates that it can read at about 22MB/s and write at about 7MB/s.

The U3 embedded into the flash drive is more annoying than useful to me. After some googling, I successfully removed U3 permanently from the flash drive. However, to be fair, I don't think U3 will do you any harm if you choose not to launch any U3 software when the U3 manager is run.

Some websites say that once you remove U3, there is no way to put it back. However, I found an article (by googling) saying that SanDisk actually provides a utility to re-install U3 into the flash drive. I have not tried the utility because U3 is useless to me, but someone may find the utility useful.

Some people complain about a cd Icon showing up when you use it on a PC, but it has auto launch stuff on it, so when you put it in your PC it will pop up and ask what you want to do with it; I would rather have it that way then going to find it through the start menu and my computer.

There are two main problems I've had with previous USB flash drives: losing them and losing the cover for the connector. The design of this drive solves both problems. It is small and the metal ring is sturdy, so I just leave it attached to my keychain, and there is no connector cover to lose due to the retracting design. The drive works well and is of comparable speed to other drives I've used.

Well, I have been through so many usb drive, from big to really tiny one. The speed and the built quality vary between those. If you only need simple usb drive, strong built design, great color, then choose this one.

Not recommend the backup service though. Cause if you want some data to be really safe, you just don't want the fact that there's a copy of your data somewhere (even though it's for back up) so that it's possible for someone to access it. Anyway, simply remove U3 software and it's perfect for conventional use. Simple it is.

Great price, but not impressed with quality. One of them never worked right out of the package. Since I am using them to move data from one computer to another, I guess the ones that work are ok, but I worry about their use long term. Get what you pay for, I suggest you go with another brand & pay a bit more.

"Formatting Doesn't Work" 2009-11-18

This drive would not format with Windows Vista. Before I could use it I kept getting the message that it must be formatted. I tried and after 15 minutes or longer, the error message "format was unsuccessful" appeared. Tried 4 or 5 more times. I was about to send it back, but then connected it to an old XP system. Formatting worked very quickly. Reconnected to my Vista OS computer and only then could I use it normally. So, despite what the packaging says, it was not compatible with Vista OS ("home premium" version). I hope it will work with Windows7. If you already have Windows7 installed, it's probably a good idea to call HP and find out before purchasing this drive.

PS: I called HP, they were no help, nor is their website. But they did tell me that 100w means it is the older version; 125w is the newest (and more expensive).

I am happy with my purchase of the 4GB flashddrive that I recently bought. It is going to be a backup to my other flashdrive and my desktop storage. I have not used it yet but it is what I wanted and it is made by a great company. It is sufficient for storing the data and documents that I need to backup. I will continue to buy items from this site and I got it at a good price and the shipping was free. It arrived in a hurry and I was in no rush to get it. The whole process was easy and quick and I like that.

Just to clarify, since it seems sometimes review for other products get mixed in - I'm reviewing the Kingston DataTraveler I - 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DTI/4GBET (White/Purple) [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]

PROS:

- Cheap

- Does The Job

- Read speed is fairly quick

CONS:

- Write speeds are very slow

As a test a copied a folder containing 900 megabytes worth of various size files in it to and from this flash drive.

TEST RESULSTS:

- It took almost 10 minutes !!! to copy the folder TO the flash drive from a computer. Crazy slow!

- It only took about 45 seconds to copy the folder FROM the flash drive back to a computer. Pretty fast.

If you're not concerned about speed, this is a good bargain and a fine cheap way to store some backup data or move a few files around.

If you're looking for speed, I would suggest a different product / brand.

There's not a heck of a lot I can say about this product other than it's wonderful. I purchased it about a year ago to transfer files from my laptop to my Mom's desktop and visa versa. With a $12 price tag and free shipping (bought something else too), I couldn't say no. This flash drive helped me transfer all of my pictures from my Mom's computer to mine before I moved out of state. I haven't had a single problem with it. I plan on ordering another one soon, one that holds more space. I absolutely recommend this product.

When flash drives started to appear on store shelves a few years ago, they tended to be tough little things that could work even if run over by a tank. Not anymore. This product feels flimsy and has a little ring that doesn't seem to have the strength to last a year with frequent use. For the moment, it does what it's suppose to do. Just make sure you have the material backed up somewhere in case of the drive disintegrating with frequent use or the little metal ring falls off and you lose it.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT. I have a regular

vista OS. When I plugged this product into my computer's

USB port, it automatically launch the LaunchU3 software

that created the following problems which until now I am

still stuck with them and want them be resolved:

1. Normalize all my picture folder items. They were solid colored

before. Now they are like transparent colored, like being suspended.

2. Remove the flashing from my USB port that was used by the Cruzer.

There has not been any flashing on this port previous to LaunchU3

when the port was not used.

3. Lastly, I need to load pictures to this Cruzer without prompt that

some pictures being copied are not available. It does not load all

pictures when I tried loading them to the Cruzer.

In summary, LaunchU3 software may have a "spyware" routine embedded in

my Computer that I am still trying to get rid of.
